The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a social security legislation enacted by the Government of India in 2005. It guarantees the right of rural citizens to 100 days of unskilled manual work in a financial year at statutory minimum wages. The Act was passed by the Parliament of India on 7 September 2005 and came into force on 2 October 2005. It is the world’s largest rural employment guarantee programme.
